The First EV Was Built in 1884

Starting off our list of facts about electric cars, did you know that EV technology dates back hundreds of years? It’s true. Thomas Park created the first electric vehicle while working on London’s electric tramways. He engineered this EV around a high-capacity rechargeable battery, which created a more efficient and environmentally friendly vehicle – a design that continues to this day.

EVs Include Cars, Transit Buses, Trucks & More

Another fun fact about electric cars is that the segment is more diverse than ever before. While most Bonita Springs drivers picture electric vehicles as small sedans or hatchbacks, intense global demand has led to more and more options. Now you can find everything from off-road off-road-ready SUVs to powerhouse trucks to sports cars in EV form. Plus, commercial vehicles have turned to electrified rides to lower operational costs and reduce emissions.

Charge Your Vehicle at Home, Work, or the Store

While you can only top off your gas-powered vehicle at a station, electrified vehicles are much more versatile. There are tons of public charging stations around the country, and more are added every single day. If you look around while driving past your local grocery stores or malls, you’re bound to see a few EV stations. And the most convenient of all, you can install your very own charging station in your garage!

There are Five Categories of Electric Vehicles

We’ve mentioned several facts about electric cars, but “electric cars” is a much wider category than you might expect. Many drivers have heard of EVs and hybrids, but did you know that there are five distinctive categories of electrified vehicles available today?

  1. Battery EVs are powered via electric motors and batteries. Charge up at any local EV station, and you can expect around 200 to 300 miles of range.
  2. Plug-In Hybrids add an internal combustion engine into the mix for a blend of power and efficiency. While they utilize dual power sources, plug-in hybrids can usually run for around 30-40 miles on electricity alone
  3. Hybrid EVs that use small electric batteries and internal combustion engines. Their batteries charge automatically, so there’s no need to plug in the car. But, they can’t run on pure electricity – just a hybrid.
  4. Extended-Range EVs that use rechargeable batteries and internal combustion engines combined. The batteries can be charged by either engine power or on the power grids.
  5. Neighborhood EVs use batteries that are recharged from a 120-volt grid. They can only reach a maximum speed of 30 mph.
