Keeping track of your tire tread wear is a great way to keep yourself safe on Cape Coral roads, but you may still be asking yourself “how do I check tire tread wear?” In this guide, you can learn how to check tire tread depth from the team at Val Ward Cadillac. Contact us if you have questions.

The Recommended Tire Tread Depth

Measuring tire tread depth is a good way to keep track of your tire tread wear. New tires usually have a tread depth of about 10/32 to 11/32 of an inch. If the tires are made for winter, for off-roading, or for use on certain trucks or SUVs, the treads could be even deeper.

Once those treads are only 2/32 of an inch deep, you probably want to replace your tires. You can find new tires at our tire center, which is only a short drive from Naples.

How To Check Tire Tread Depth: The Penny Test

But, “how do I check tire tread wear?” you’re probably saying. Well, there are two main methods. For the first, all you need is a penny which happens to be the perfect measuring device for tire tread wear. Just follow these steps.

  1. Stick a penny into your tire tread groove with Lincoln head-first.
  2. Check to see how far Lincoln’s head goes into your tire tread grooves.
  3. The gap above the top of his head is about 2/32 inches long, so if you can see all of Lincoln’s head, your tires are worn down.
  4. Check multiple locations on each tire, and repeat for all your tires.

How To Check Tire Tread Depth: Other Methods

Some Bonita Springs-area drivers no longer use cash. If that includes you, then here are two other methods for you to check tread depth and wear:

  • Use a Tread Depth Gauge: You’ll have to buy one from an auto-supply shop, but they don’t cost much. Insert the probe in the shallowest tread groove, then press the gauge flat against the tire. You’ll be able to read an exact measurement.
  • Use Tread Wear Bars: Many tires have built in tread wear indicator bars. They’re located in the bottom of the tread grooves all over the tire. If those bars are flush with the treads that surround them, your tire is worn down enough to replace.
